The Vijaya Vitthala Temple at Hampi is a UNESCO masterpiece of 15th-century Vijayanagara architecture, famed for its stone chariot with rotating granite wheels and 56 musical pillars that produce distinct notes when tapped. The grand Kalyana Mandapam and exquisitely carved pavilions make this the finest surviving monument of a once-vast empire.
Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire — at its peak one of the largest cities in the world — before it was sacked in 1565. The stone chariot facing the main hall is the symbol of Karnataka and appears on the state's official emblem.
8:30 AM–5:30 PM daily. Entry ₹30 (Indians), ₹500 (Foreigners). Electric carts run from Hampi Bazaar to the temple (₹30 return).
November to February for pleasant weather. The Hampi Utsav festival in November adds cultural performances amid the ruins.
